Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL Program)

The TEFL Certificate Program at Camber College is a 120-hour program
extending over four to six weeks. It is designed for university graduates who wish to gain the skills and expertise to teach ESL. The program curriculum develops student understanding of both the theory and practice of English language teaching. Upon completion of the 120-hour program, students will have studied various methodologies of teaching English and will be familiar with English as a Foreign Language textbooks used around the world. Students will also have the opportunity to practice their teaching skills and gain valuable feedback on their abilities from their peers and qualified teacher trainers. Our teacher trainers are all university-educated professionals with English teaching credentials and many years of teaching experience. Having taught abroad and worked extensively with international students from a variety of countries, our instructors are able to share both their cultural understanding and their expertise in the field. Camber College is registered with the Canada Language Council (CLC). Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a TEFL Certificate from Camber College.


Course Content

The 120-Hour International TEFL Certificate Program develops practical skills in teaching English as a Foreign Language. The program covers a wide range of teaching skills and techniques involved in the instruction of English as a Foreign Language, including coverage of:

English Language Teaching Methodology Teaching Vocabulary, Structure, Functions and Pronunciation
Classroom Management Skills Development of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing Skills
Lesson and Course Planning Effective Teaching Aid and
Resource Material Use
Best Practice for Teaching
Young Learners & Adolescents
Strategies for Self-Evaluation
Oral testing and English language assessment Communicative Activities


Program Structure

The program is structured and delivered through four main components.

I. Classroom Instruction
Classes are held from Monday to Friday 9:00am to 3:10pm for 4 weeks
Students must follow Camber College policies for lateness and absences in order to receive certification. Evaluation is based on assignments, practice teaching, and participation.

II. Micro Teaching
Students are required to plan and teach EFL (English as a Foreign Language) lessons to their fellow students. Students participate in feedback sessions focusing on lesson strengths and areas for improvement.

III. Observation Classes
Students have the opportunity to observe experienced teachers during the program After each observation, debriefing sessions are held to discuss the effectiveness of observed teaching techniques and practices. Students will also have the chance to teach authentic ESL students already attending Camber College.

IV. Practicum
Upon successful graduation from the program all students will have the chance to do a 20 hour practicum over a two-week period. This will involve team teaching as well as designing and delivering individual lesson plans.
